Palm Springs Day Trip: Joshua Tree National Park

The Palm Springs area is a place with endless things to do — festivals, a great local food scene, endless shopping opportunities and golf courses are all common activities that residents here can take advantage of.  But one of Palm Springs’ most popular and internationally famous areas lies not within, but just north of this oasis city — The Joshua Tree National Park. This national park borders the northern side of Palm Springs and provides homeowners with the ideal day trip to explore the many geological formations and, of course, its Joshua Trees. Joshua Tree National Park Information Located just north of the city of Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National park is a nationally preserved area that spans nearly 800,000 acres — larger than the entire state of Rhode Island Here, sightseers come from all over the nation and beyond to see the incredible rock formations, local flora and fauna unique to the area, and at night, gaze up at the stars and the Milky Way. Since Joshua Tree National Park is located 5000 feet above sea level, it’s part of what’s known as the High Desert. This, coupled with the fact that there’s considerably less light pollution than many other areas leads to some of the best celestial views in the country. Facts About Joshua Trees Joshua Tree National Park gets its name from the abundance of Joshua Trees in the area. Though not actually trees, Joshua Trees, also known as yucca brevifolia, are plants that are found in typically arid climates, such as those of Northwestern Mexico, Arizona and of course California.  These cactus-like plants are protected, since they play such an important part in keeping their natural ecosystem alive. While Joshua Trees have an average age of 500 years old, recent research has shown that they may be affected by climate change. Camping in Joshua Tree National Park Joshua Tree National Park provides some of the best camping in the country, all just a few minutes away from Palm Springs real estate.  With over three hundred reservable campsites and over seventy five “first come, first served” spots, Joshua Tree National Park is a popular destination for those looking to spend some time living amongst the natural beauty of the area.
